A band a lifetime in the making….Closer Apart is the culmination of a long friendship. Robert Hickson and Mick Ford met while studying drama at Manchester University. Successful as actors and writers, in theatre and film, music became the thread that bound them together.
Closer Apart are....

Robert Hickson
Is a British-Irish musician, who has also worked as an actor and screenwriter. As an actor performed all over the British Isles, including at The Royal Shakespeare Company and The National Theatre as well as in Europe and the US. Hickson and Ford’s music has been commissioned for stage and screen many times. With Closer Apart, he has created a community of musicians and creatives who contribute to the band’s music. Playing music professionally since before university, he has been in many bands including NTP, The Ultra Smooth Swagger Band, USSB.

Lottie Roach
Is a British musician and a core member of Closer Apart. Roach is also a TV and theatre actress who has worked all over the United Kingdom, several times at the National Theatre. A gifted musician from a young age, she performed as Junior Exhibitioner at The Royal College of Music before studying at university and Central St Martins art college. Roach and Hickson met in 2001 while filming The Six Wives of Henry Vlll for Channel 4 and have played and written together ever since. She is a violinist, pianist and singer who also teaches music.

Mick Ford
Is a British actor, musician and screenwriter whose recent work includes The Boy with the Topknot (2017) for the BBC and After the Flood (2024) for ITV. A big early musical influence was being a choir boy which led to a lifelong passion for music and harmony. Ford plays keyboards, saxophone, clarinet and sings with Closer Apart, which he formed with Robert Hickson over 20 years ago after many years of collaboration. With Robert, he co-wrote Bad Hats, a feature film co-funded by Channel 4 and a French production company.
